12 November – Gold and silver at the World Championships

Last week Sharon Gill and Ishana Moores were in Hungary representing Team GB at the WAKO World Championships. They both fought incredibly well and came away with the silverware to reflect all the hard work they have put in.

Ishana was at her first adult World Championships having represented the Team GB Junior team for years. She really stepped and fought her way all the way through to the final where she narrowly lost a very tough fight. To get a silver medal at her first adult championships is a great achievement and well deserved for someone who trains so hard.

Sharon was aiming for her 7th World title and achieved it in style. She beat all her opponents once again. The standards she continues to set and achieve are the very best and this is shown by winning a remarkable 7th World title.

Massive well done to both of you.

20 – 21 May – Hungarian Open

A great weekend for Team Bristol and WAKO GB at the Hungarian World Cup. One of the best organised tournaments with great standards especially in the points divisions.

Well done to Cory Cook and Rio Williams for getting golds in light contact and kick light, and to Jack Sowersby for getting gold in a very tough points division.

Also massive well done to Liam Holden, Grace Chandler, Hayden Challenger and Aston Cook for fighting their hearts out and representing us this weekend and getting on the rostrum with medals.

4 – 5 February – Athens Challenge

Another great weekend at the Athens Challenge with Team Bristol and WAKO GB.

We only took a small team with us but everyone of them fought well over ten fights over the two days against a lot of the top European kids out there. So many Bulgarians, Russians, Italians and Greeks just to name a few of the countries, but the experience gained was second to none! There were also some excellent results. Very well done to:

Rio Williams – 4 x Gold and 1 x Bronze
Hayden Challenger – 3 x Gold and 2 x Bronze
Jack Sowersby – 2 x Gold and 1 x Bronze

We also entered a team in the younger cadets (10-12yrs) with two 9yr olds and we fought brilliantly, making it to the final of the sheet but losing out to some very big top Italians, so earning a very well deserved bronze team medal

Well done to everyone. A great weekend yet again.

Sunday 29th – Watford Open

Another successful tournament for GB Fit yesterday at the Watford Open!

Apart from the Bristol Open, I would say the Watford Open is the next biggest tournament in the UK with a massive turn out of hundreds of competitors not only from the UK but from European countries too!!

We had a small team this time round of just 5 fighters consisting of ..
1. Domenic Cimini
2. Beau Concannon
3. Jack Sowersby
4. Liam Holden
5. Izzy Whitmore

Everyone fought their hearts out and gave 100%. Domenic and Beau fought extremely well for their first big tournament and both would have learned a great deal and gained great experience in the process, not just in the martial arts world, but in life in general…. with Domenic achieving 1st place, so a big well done to both of them.
Jack, Liam and Izzy really made me proud as all three of them came 1st with Liam winning both his points division and his light contact… as a coach, I couldn’t have asked for any more…

WELL DONE TO EVERYONE!!

8 January 2017 – Daz Ellis Open in Solihull

The first tournament kicked off yesterday with Team Bristol on top form at the Daz Ellis Open in Solihull. We had lots of competitors representing us from 7-17yrs old and everyone did themselves proud.

For some, it’s the start of a new year, so moving up sections and fighting bigger and older opponents can be hard at first, but after a while will get used to it and will be back on that winning form again. For others it was their first big tournament and was very nerve racking, but showed will and determination and the ‘never giving up attitude’ that we like to embed into our students.

Well done to everyone who fought, full list and results below.

1. Eli Star – 3rd (first tournament)
2. Rosie Ryan – 2nd (first tournament)
3. Hayden Challenger – 2 x 1st -28kgs advanced

Our year in review

So as 2016 draws to a close we wanted to take this chance to look back at what has been an incredible year for GB Fit. It has only been our second year of action as a club, but we have achieved so much. Here are just some of the highlights:

• Co Founder Sharon Gill won the WAKO European Championships again, making her the reigning World and European Champion.

• Co Founder Dan Blythe passed his 3rd Degree Black Sash in Lau Gar kung fu and also ran his first 100km ultra marathon, coming 11th out of 200.
• We opened our gym.

• Aston Cook joined us as an instructor, teaching both fitness and Little Dragons classes.

• Cory Cook, Izzy Whitmore and Rio Williams all became World Champions, by winning the WAKO Junior World Championships. This also makes Cory the reigning World and European Champion.

• Izzy Whitmore also passed her 1st Degree Black Sash in Lau Gar kung fu.

• We have been to Ireland, Austria, Italy, Croatia, Holland, Belgium and Greece and have won more international and domestic medals and trophies then we have been able to add up.

• Every one of our students (apart from the black sash’s) have graded at least once this year and everyone has progressed in their traditional kung fu.

• We are finishing the year with a record number of students across the club.

It has been a phenomenal year for us and our students. We are still a new club, but are very proud of what we have achieved already. Loong may it continue! We cannot wait for 2017! Well done to all of GB Fit. The members and parents are what makes us so good. The effort you have put […]

27 August 2016 – Dan runs 100km in a day

On Saturday 27 August, GB Fit Co Founder Dan Blythe completed the South Coast Challenge – a 100km (63 miles) ultra marathon. It was an incredibly tough course with over 2500m of elevation gain in 27 degree heat. Despite this being Dan’s 1st ultra marathon, he finished the course in 13 hours and 34 minutes, coming in 11th place out of 200! He was only beaten by 10 seasoned ultra runners.

He’s also managed to raise over £3,000 for Fight for Sight.

28 August – 4 September 2016 – 3 new World Champions

Last week GB Fit had 8 members compete in the WAKO Junior World Championships in Dublin last week and they did amazingly well.

Unfortunately Liam Holden, Grace Chandler and Emily Rowland all went out in the first round after having a very tough draw, but fought their hearts out in their fights, which was so nice to see and we are very proud of each one of them and know their time will come.

Lauren Howie won her first fight, which was against a really tough competitor but dug deep and won which was awesome, Unfortunately then she lost her next round against one of the best Greek fighters, but again held her head up high!

Ishana Moores was fighting brilliant all the way to the semi finals but unfortunately lost out to a very fast top Italian fighter, which could’ve gone either way, but earned a well deserved Bronze medal.
Cory Cook, Rio Williams and Izzy Whitmore were on fire all week, every one of these fighters fought their way throughout a tough week to the finals showing sheer determination and wanting nothing else but to win and they all did just that. They all achieved GOLD MEDALS and we are absolutely over the moon!

For just one club in GB we did extremely well achieving 3 Gold medals and 1 Bronze medal and we don’t think we’ve ever seen it anywhere else.

They all trained especially hard over the summer holidays with them all giving up their days training serious hours in the gym with Sharon, sweating, breathing hard and having some really tough, gruelling sessions, but it all paid off.

Thank you to you all of you, not only did you represent yourselves but represented GB Fit and […]

Gold and bronze at the WAKO World Championships!

Sharon Gill won her 6th individual world kickboxing title at the 2015 WAKO World Championships in Dublin, Ireland. Once again she showed the world that she is the best, with some incredible fighting. Her speed, movement and skill were too much for her opponents and she won her final fight by a wide margin, scoring 3 head kicks in the process.

6 world titles is an absolutely incredible achievement and is a reflection of thousands of hours of training and hard work. Sharon is constantly setting the standard for us, Team GB and the world.

Aston Cook was also competing in her 1st adult world championships and fought her way through a very tough division to win a bronze medal. This is another brilliant achievement from an athlete who is getting better and better. To win bronze at her first adult tournament is amazing and again reflects all the hard work and training that Aston has put in.

WAKO Junior European Championships – 23 to 30 August

7 of our students have just got back from representing Great Britain at the WAKO Junior European Championships in Spain. To have that many selected for the British squad shows how good these young fighters are, but on top of that we came away with 1 gold and 4 bronze medals. It was a great tournament for our squad that is getting stronger and better all the time.

Cory Cook – GOLD, -42kgs 13-15yrs
Following his silver medal in the World Championships last year, Cory was a seeded entrant in this tournament. He did not let any pressure get to him and fought with amazing skill and determination to come through and win gold. He had some incredibly tough fights as his division is stacked with talent. In the quarters, semis and final he had to fight all 3 of the other top ranked fighters in the world: Svetoslav Kovachki from Bulgaria, Botond Hegedüs from Hungary and Anatoly Nikiforov from Russia. Cory is a top talent and showed his class once again.

Liam Holden – 2 x BRONZE, -28kgs 10-12yrs and team competition
Liam had a great tournament coming away with 2 bronze medals: 1 in the individual competition and 1 in the team event. In the individual competition he got through to the quarter finals where he fought Daniel Fenaroli from Italy and won by 4 points. In the semi final he fought Mihail Georgiev from Bulgaria. Unfortunately, despite giving it his best shot, he lost the fight, but still came away with bronze, which is a brilliant achievement in his first international competition.

Rio Williams – BRONZE (team competition), -32kgs 10-12yrs

Sporting Stars help kids set goals

Eight primary schools across Bristol attended Day 2 of the Art of Being Brilliant, Brilliant Bristol project yesterday at the Bristol Rovers Memorial Stadium.

Brilliant Bristol aims to inspire Year 5 children to choose to adopt a positive attitude, become more confident and to raise levels of happiness. The project is being delivered by Andy Cope a leading author, professional trainer and happiness expert.
The key principles of the Art of Being Brilliant were delivered on Day 1 at the Gloucestershire County Cricket Ground in January. Day 2 of the project focussed on setting huge unbelievably great goals (HUGGs), how to bounce back from setbacks and become more resilient.
The session was boosted by the attendance of local sports personalities who shared their experiences of what it took to become successful and achieve their goals. Wushu seminar with Coach Xia from China – 29 January

Last night Sharon, Dan and several students went to a wushu seminar held by Coach Xia who is over from the legendary Wong Fei Hung School in China. We joined other Lau Gar students and instructors from across Bristol and had a brilliant night. Was great to learn something from a different style of kung fu. Coach Xia is amazing. His kung fu is incredible and he also taught a room full of people kung fu for over 2 hours without speaking English. Amazing.
